My walk to Monash each morning – across this old bridge and through the city walls via the Porta della Mercatale. This is where the water rats hang out – usually on the rocks where the guy is fishing.

Francisco Datini overlooking his piazza. He was a 14th century merchant of Prato who left his fortune to the poor. His documents were found walled up in a staircase in his house and provide a fantastic window on his times. (I am reading a book based on them at the moment: ‘The Merchant of Prato’, by Iris Origa.)
